Este trabajo constituye un primer esfuerzo por analizar la labor de José Cayetano de Foncerrada y Ulibarri como diputado por Michoacán en las Cortes Generales y Extraordinarias de 1810 en Cádiz. Sobre Foncerrada se ha escrito muy poco, limitándose los trabajos a breves reseñas biográficas y algunas menciones en trabajos sobre la participación de los diputados americanos en las Cortes. Foncerrada era abogado y sacerdote y fue firmante de la Constitución Política de la Monarquía Española de 1812.
