L’article propose une analyse historique et esthétique de la toile peinte à l’huile
Action militaire à Pueblo Viejo, 1829 par Carlos Paris. Cette Tmuvre représente la
victoire de l’armée mexicaine sur l’expédition hispanique, dans le cadre de son
projet de reconquête de l’ancienne Nouvelle-Espagne. C’est à partir de ce fait
d’armes que se forge l’image héroïque du général Antonio López de Santa Anna.
Cette construction, associée aux récit épiques de l’époque, a contribué à ériger ce
personnage historique en la figure politique et militaire prépondérante de la
première moitié du XIXe siècle mexicain, incarnant ainsi la jeune nation.
