Resulta difícil acercarse, con objetividad, a personajes o
acontecimientos históricos que se han convertido en piezas
fundamentales de lo que Enrique Florescano ha llamado la versión
canónica de nuestra historia. Tratar con personajes como Hidalgo o
Iturbide -es decir, con el héroe y el villano según nos ha querido
convencer la historia oficial- se vuelve una empresa complicada pues,
entre otras cosas, hay que vérselas con juicios y prejuicios largamente
sedimentados en la conciencia histórica. Por eso resulta fácil acusar
al historiador que quiere ejercer una visión crítica de querer burlarse
de los héroes o de querer convertirse en abogado del diablo. O por el
contrario, es posible que el historiador con afanes revisionistas pierda
la brújula y termine por convertir al héroe en villano, negándole todo
mérito, o viceversa, convierta al villano en el hombre providencial.
