Le présent article se propose d’exposer l’atmosphère sociale et politique, qui régnait dans la Nouvelle-Espagne suite à l’invasion française de la péninsule ibérique en 1808, et ce à partir de l’analyse de seize jugements pour crime de lèse-majesté contre le monarque espagnol. Les cas ont été jugés par un tribunal spécial, la “junte de sécurité et du bon ordre”, tribunal crée en 1809 par le vice-roi de l’époque, l’archevêque Francisco Xavier Lizana y Beaumont. L’article essaye de mettre en relief le climat de crainte sociale et l’étendue de la fidélité monarchique qui ont été générés par l’invasion française, et de quelles manières la mentalité collective a fonctionné en période de crise.
