Si bien existen opiniones contrarias a la concepción del Caribe como entidad comprensiva,  la mayoóa de los autores que escriben, desde las diferentes disciplinas, sobre el área están de acuerdo en que ésta posee caracteósticas políticas, económicas y sociales propias que la distinguen de los países continentales de América y que son el resultado de una experiencia histórica común, basada en su condición de colonias de plantación y de pequeños estados isleños, existiendo esta comunidad de experiencias por encima de la fragmentación geográfica, lingüística y étnica.
