Tras la derrota en la batalla de Ayacucho los oficiales del ejército realista retornaron a una España en la que Fernando VII había recuperado el poder absoluto. El artículo se ocupa de cuál fue la suerte de los vencidos, tomando como referentes a sus dos máximos responsables, Gerónimo Valdés y José de Canterac. Se sigue su trayectoria desde que tras un tiempo de relegamiento fueron convocados para defender los derechos de la futura Isabel II y llegaron a ocupar puestos militares y políticos antes de que Espartero encumbrara a los Ayacuchos durante su Regencia. Se les sitúa en el proceso inestable de lo que fue la construcción del Estado liberal, y se subraya cómo una constante en sus acciones y manifestaciones públicas fue la defensa de su honor tanto en tiempos de absolutismo como de liberalismo.
