En mayo de 1916, el español Augusto Ibáñez Serrano fue detenido por la policía
en México D. F. y, de inmediato, internado en la Penitenciaría de Lecumberri,
tras ser acusado de colaborar con el general Félix Díaz, uno de los militares
enemigos del proyecto constitucionalista de Venustiano Carranza. En este
contexto histórico, marcado por liderazgos enfrentados, fuertes tensiones
revolucionarias y una acuciante hispanofobia, el objetivo de este artículo es
presentar y analizar el proceso penal de este súbdito español durante sus 13 meses
de reclusión, donde, entre otras particularidades, destacaría el incondicional
apoyo diplomático del gobierno de Alfonso XIII y, en particular, de la Legación
de España en México.
