Este texto busca resaltar los límites y las contingencias que implica la
investigación detrás de las biografías históricas centradas en Nueva España.
Para ello, se subrayan las características de los materiales disponibles, las
consideraciones alrededor de ellos y, en la medida de lo posible, su lugar
dentro de la sociedad de la época. Como forma de ilustrarlo, el texto se
centra, en primer lugar, en una revisión de los presupuestos de la biografía
contemporánea en el contexto novohispano, se consideran particularmente
tres estudios sobre Hernán Cortés. En segundo lugar, estudia una â€œrelación de
méritos y serviciosâ€, uno de los materiales más recurrentes en la producción
de dichas biografías.
