Autoridad y gobierno indígena en Michoacán es una obra sui géneris y
provocadora. Las dimensiones del texto en sí ofrecen una idea de su
originalidad: con la colaboración de 41 autores o coautores, el libro
consta de 28 capítulos que abarcan seis siglos de la historia
michoacana e incluye dos apéndices importantes, uno cartográfico y
demográfico y el otro bibliográfico. La obra no es un tratamiento
exhaustivo ni tiene pretensiones enciclopédicas. Al contrario, la meta
es presentar una muestra de casos concretos basados en información
primaria que nos permiten vislumbrar un universo histórico
sumamente complejo. Con una organización cronológica, el texto
presenta cuatro grandes transiciones en el gobierno y la autoridad
indígena en Michoacán pero éstas siempre están traslapadas por una
miríada de corrientes concretas de cambio y continuidad.
