4 de julio de 1760, los primeros rayos del sol iluminaron Guanajuato, la que por su su ubicación y composición, parecía
pequeña, “la situación de ésta –escribió Antonio de Ulloa– es en un estrecho espacio que dejan entre sí las dos cordilleras de cerros… la ciudad viene a estar en las desigualdades de sus concurrencias” por esta razón, agregó, los pobladores se veían obligados“para fabricar las casas (a) hurtarle a los cerros parte de sus faldas, cortándolos a pico, en cuyo modo se hace la planicie suficiente que sirve de suelo”.
